» Valley A trough formed by the intersec- tion of two roof slopes.Valley rafter A diagonal rafter that sup- ports a valley.
» Vapor barrier See Vapor retarder.
» Vapor permeability Vapor permeance per unit of thickness.
» Vapor permeance A measure of the ease with which water vapor can diffuse through a material.
» Vapor pressure A measure of the pres- sure exerted by water molecules in a gas- eous state, generally higher with higher relative humidity and higher air tempera- ture.
» Vapor retarder A layer of material in- tended to resist the diffusion of water vapor through a building assembly. Also called, less accurately, vapor barrier.
» Varnish A slow-dr ying transparent coat- ing.
» Vault An arched surface. A strongly built room for such purposes as housing large electrical equipment or safeguard- ing money.
» Vee joint A joint whose profile resem- bles the letter V.
» Vegetated roof See Green roof. Veneer A thin layer, sheet, or facing. Veneer plaster A wall finish system in
which a thin finish layer of
gypsum plas-

also called edge-grain lumber. See also Flat-grain lumber.
» Vierendeel truss A truss with rectangu- lar panels and rigid joints but no diagonal members. The members of a Vierendeel truss are subjected to strong nonaxial forces.
» Vinyl See Polyvinyl chloride.
» Visible light transmittance (VT) The ratio of visible light that passes through a sheet of glass or a glazing unit to the
amount of light striking the glass or unit.
» Visual grading The grading of wood for its structural properties, based on visual inspection, as distinct from machine grading; not to be confused with appearance grading.
» Vitrification The process of transform- ing a material into a glassy substance by means of heat.
Volatile organic compound (VOC) Or- ganic (carbon-based) chemical com- pound that evaporates readily, is a signifi- cant air pollutant, a potential irritant to building occupants, and, in some cases, a greenhouse gas.
change joint A building separa- tion joint that allows for expansion and contraction of adjacent portions of a building without distress.
» Voussoir A wedge-shaped element of an arch or vault.
» VT See Visible light transmittance.
