Liquid Nitriding
Liquid Nitriding (LN) is a common term for a diffusion process that is actually liquid nitrocarburizing; a thermo-chemical reaction whereby nitrogen, primarily, and some carbon are diffused into the surface of iron-based materials. The nitrogen combines with the iron to form an iron-nitride compound layer that provides improved surface properties; e.g. resistance to wear, friction, corrosion, and fatigue.
Nitriding, or, nitrocarburizing, can be accomplished using four different media:
- Liquid
- Gas
- Plasma
- Fluidized Bed
Gas Nitriding
Gas Nitriding is a form of steel heat treatment in which one uses heat to diffuse nitrogen-rich gas onto the surface of the metal with the intention of hardening it. The nitride hardening process integrates into the bulk material, allowing the portion of metal below the surface layer to remain soft.
- Low-cost compared with other case applications. The process runs with minimum required supervision, post-process components are dimensionally stable, and there is very little if any treatment necessary in post heat treat operations.
- Zero to minimal distortion experienced on parts, which enables precise dimensional control.
- High volume capability. Furnace size is the primary limiting factor.
- Wear and corrosion resistant.
Chrome Plating
Chrome plating (less commonly chromium plating) is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal object. The after product of chrome plating is called chrome. The chromed layer can be decorative, provide corrosion resistance, ease cleaning procedures, or increase surface hardness. Sometimes, a less expensive imitator of chrome may be used for aesthetic purposes.
