Applications of Laser in Engineering and other industries:
In 1960, when Laser was first invented, it was regarded as a device looking for applications. Today, in the 21st century, it is difficult to find any field where laser cannot be used. It is now the greatest invention 2nd to the invention of transistor. LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification due to Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Due to its stimulated emission, Laser acquires some unique properties

  • Directionality – Low divergence
  • Spatial and Temporal Coherence

Owing to these properties the Laser travels much longer distances without much spread like ordinary light from finite emitter size. Also, as it is electromagnetic radiation, it can be transported and directed from one point to other by relay mirrors or even optical fibre cables. Secondly, it can be focused by lens or curved mirrors to the finest/shortest point within order of magnitude of diffraction limit. So,at focus, the power density of even 1 Watt Laser reaches 4 Watt/ square Centimeter.

At such power density, any metal/ non metal vaporizes instantaneously. And, so, all the above mentioned properties make it very useful for many different applications like cutting, welding, scribing, dicing, surface treatments, hardening, cladding, marking, etc.

Laser, being a beam of light travels by the speed of light. Input for generating laser power is electric power or other optical sources like diodes. This gives further advantage , without the tool on/off time, Laser is much faster, as it will be only beam on/off by optical or electric power switches. Thus, Laser has come to a new level now, that it is ideal tool for metal / non metal cutting, metal to metal (including both, similar and dissimilar metals) joining, hardening, additive manufacturing, and more simpler but wide application of Laser marking on any parts, sub assemblies, for traceability. We, Laser Automation Pvt. Ltd. Have realized and understood the importance of Lasers in Industry.
